Edgewood, NY — The Lightning Warriors (www.lightningwarriors.org) is a proud grant recipient of the 2020 USA Triathlon Foundation COVID-19 Relief Fund, established in April to support members of the multisport community who have been adversely impacted by the pandemic.
The Lightning Warriors after a successful 2019 Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon held at West Meadow Beach has been working on the 2nd Annual Event. However due to current circumstances has changed gears to create the Free Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon Virtual Challenge. This six week program will challenge will be available to 200 kids and is designed to educate young people with trivia and physically with swim, bike and run challenge goals starting on August 2nd. The participants will have an opportunity to engage professional triathletes who will host a trivia program and lead workouts during the week.
The professionals include; Joe Maloy-2016 Mixed Relay Olympic Champion, Jodie Robertson-2017 Ironman Texas Champion, Kirsten Kasper-2016 Mixed Relay World Champion, Matt McElroy-Current #1 Ranked Men’s Elite, Linsey Corbin-8 time Ironman Champion.
“Interacting and being engaged with others kids in a dynamic sport, such as triathlon has an important part of childhood,” says Noah Lam, Lightning Warriors Founder and Head Coach. “We are very grateful for the USA Triathlon Foundation, friends and sponsors to continue to support youth programs during this unusual period of time where kids have limited options to be active and outdoors.”
The USA Triathlon Foundation received 173 applications and over $866,000 in requests for grant funding from USA Triathlon-certified race directors and race management organizations; USA Triathlon-certified coaches and clubs; and other individuals and organizations that have been impacted by the pandemic. The foundation was able to distribute $110,000 in grants to 40 organizations and individuals that reflect the USA Triathlon Foundation’s mission of supporting the multisport community.
“During these challenging times, the USA Triathlon Foundation is honored to support the multisport community through our COVID-19 Relief Fund,” said Dave Deschenes, USA Triathlon Foundation Executive Director. “Through the generosity of supporters, athletes and donors we were able to raise over $110,000 to be distributed across the country to help those in need.”
The USA Triathlon Foundation is located in Boulder, Colorado with a mission to support and promote triathlon, and open pathways to triathlon in those whom it might not otherwise be possible. The Foundation focuses on three key areas (young athletes, paratriathletes, and/or Olympic hopefuls) to provide the opportunities for every child to participate, every paratriathlete to compete, and every youth athlete to chase his or her Olympic dream.
